It’s been awesome partnering with new contributors in new neighborhoods… some are experienced writers, while others are people who are interesting in writing and journalism but didn’t quite know how to get started.

There are several stories in the works, and the most recent completed piece came from Derrick McCormick in the Mississippi District. As a student of philosophy unsatisfied by the current state of discourse in the United States, he is developing a procedure to improve communication called Debate by Agreement.

He’s been testing it on the streets of Mississippi Ave, and is looking for more people willing to try out the process. Read more about Debate by Agreement here.

“This family friendly event (Register here) is fun for all ages! Bring your family, friends, employees, coworkers, and potential new Chamber members to enjoy an early afternoon of bowling, socializing, and networking as we kick off the holiday season. This fundraising event for the East Portland Chamber of Commerce, a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization.

Fix-It Fair, from the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability:

“Bring one item to be fixed by a Repair PDX volunteer, while learning how to do it yourself. (Volunteers will do their best, but do not guarantee a complete repair.) You may bring a small counter-top appliance, such as a toaster, or an article of clothing.”

There’ll be workshops on sustainability, energy savings, and community resources, as well as: free lead blood testing; free giveaways; hourly door prizes; free professional childcare; free lunch; and free minor bike tune-ups and flat tire repair for students and families.

“Learn to cook a different dish each month. 

This month, you will get a demonstration on how to make apple pie and pumpkin pie, just mention that we will simplify how to make two classic holiday pies from scratch. People will learn how to make the crust, and filling and take one small pie home to finish baking and have a slice of both to try.
